NOTES:

  • Established on June 25, 1865 under a Spanish royal decree as Carcel y Presidio Correccional 
  • Managed by U.S. Department of Justice under the Commonwealth.
  • The U.S. Bureau of Prisons was established in 1930 and later took over the management of Bilibid.
  • The current Philippine Bureau of Corrections is a continuation of the Bureau of Prisons.
  • Noted that majority of Philippine Government offices were established under the Commonwealth Government, most of them later maintained but renamed after gaining independence.
  • Most of these government offices are active to date.
  • Not to be confused with the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa.
  • This Prison is now called The Manila City Jail.
